BUTLER — “You did a great job serving,” Pendleton County Schools Superintendent Joe Buerkley told high school senior Ava Record at her final Board of Education meeting.

Each year, one student serves on the Board of Education, representing students.

“She’ll be a tough act to follow,” board Vice Chair Laura Schack said.

Board chairman Cheryl Griffin said, “I’ve known Ava since she was born, from that shy, little girl who cried if you looked at her to this strong, confident person.”

The district presented Record with a desk clock to commemorate her service.

Record, who will graduate May 13 from Pendleton High School, said she enjoyed working on the board and seeing how decisions are made.

Issues this school year included renovations of the building and stadium at Sharp Middle School,

addressing concerns brought out in the 2023-24 Impact Kentucky Working Conditions Survey, administration of academic intervention programs and curriculum updates, and the annual budget.

“Getting to see the behind-the-scenes stuff was pretty cool,” Record said. “They put a lot of thought into it.”

She hadn’t yet made the final decision on which university she will attend this fall, but said, “I want to go into legal studies with different businesses.”
